Good English Isn't the Same as Effective Workplace Communication

June 20, 2026

One of the biggest surprises for many English learners is that "good English" and "effective workplace communication" are not always the same thing.

Textbook English teaches grammar, vocabulary, and sentence structure. Those are important. But meetings are different.

In a meeting, you need to:

  • Explain a problem clearly
  • Ask questions confidently
  • Disagree professionally
  • Clarify misunderstandings
  • Summarize decisions
  • Keep discussions moving forward

Many professionals have studied English for years but still feel uncomfortable speaking during meetings because these skills are rarely taught in traditional English classes.

Over the years, I've worked in management, manufacturing, and education across different countries. One thing I've learned is that successful communication is often less about using perfect English and more about expressing ideas clearly and confidently.

A simple, direct message delivered with confidence is usually more effective than a complicated message delivered with hesitation.

What communication challenges do you face when working in English?

I'm currently accepting a small number of private coaching clients who want to improve their English for meetings, presentations, interviews, and professional communication. Feel free to send me a message if you'd like to learn more.
